Don't Let Heat Sap Your trees' Health
It's easy to see heat stress in our yards and among our flowers, but you might not notice stressed trees until it's too late. A thirtsy tree can experience damage and attacks by pests, says Bri- an Jorgenson of the Boise Parks and Recreation Community Forestry Unit. So, to keep your trees healthy, city foresters recommend:
Water deeply two to three times a week for about 30 minutes each time. If the soil is sandy, it may need watering more often. Too much water can] also hurt a plant, so don't overdo it. Water between `10:00pm. and 8a.m. to help conserve water lost by evap- oration. Young and newly-planted trees also need special attention, meaning they may need water more often. Older, established trees have large root systems that spread beyond the tree's canopy. Water in the area under and just outside the canopy of the tree. Don't neglect trees in the right-of-way or parkway strips that line streets in some neighborhoods. For more imformation on caring for your trees.
